Victorian
Calling Cards
The original custom of carrying calling cards began in France.
It spread quickly through Europe and was extremely popular in the United States. These calling cards were carried by
the "well-to-do" ladies who went calling on friends and family. The cards would be left at each persons home
the caller went to visit whether the person was home or not.
Hundreds
of thousands of these cards were printed through the 1890's and styles changed from hand written cards to elaborate diecut
embossed cards. Many of the cards were "hidden name" cards which meant the name of the caller was covered
by a victorian scrap and had to be lifted to see who the caller was. These cards are exquisite in detail and vibrancy.
Many of these magnificent cards found their way into victorian scrapbooks
and are collected today. Below are some samples of these pieces of art.
